How to Win Over Your Professors in Law School

Your law professors can make or break you.

In many ways, they hold the keys to your future. They grade you, determine whether or not you get access to the best externships, and know alumni and lawyers who could hook you up with jobs.

Win them over, and you could set yourself up for a successful and lucrative career. Fall into ill favor with them, and you might be on your own.

Here are three (relatively) easy ways to win over your professors.

Do your job.
You’d be surprised how many students don’t do the things they’re supposed to do—the reading, the briefing, participating in class. These are the bare minimum requirements for any law school student.

Don’t do them and you’ll become a target in every class discussion–interrogated, criticized and embarrassed. Or worse, you’ll become persona non grata in the eyes of your professors.

Do them and you’ll stay off your professors’ bad sides. Do them well and you may earn their respect. Do them well and with professionalism, and you’ll win over your professors, who will then be more likely to cut you some slack and recommend you for supplemental learning opportunities or jobs.

Do a little extra.
So you’re preparing for and participating in class with professionalism. Great. Now take things a step further.

Schedule some time to meet with your professors during their office hours, and prepare for the meetings by thinking of a couple smart questions to ask.

Ask them for clarification on legal theories you haven’t entirely grasped yet. Ask them what they think you should be doing to supplement your classroom experience. Ask them for the names of a couple of practicing lawyers with whom you can connect. Ask them for their advice.

Doing a little extra work to demonstrate that you’re engaged in the educational process will go a long way toward winning over your professors. Asking for their advice will do even more.

Do a little flattering.
Speaking of asking for advice, this may be the single most effective way to win over your law professors.

If there’s one thing it’s law professors love, it’s being viewed as the smartest, most well-connected people in the room. So make them feel like they are the smartest, most well-connected people in the room.

Find out a little about them, show them you know about their accomplishments and then ask for their help.
