The Best New Year’s Resolutions for Law Students

Every New Year comes complete with new opportunities–but only if you dedicate yourself to making the most of them.

That, of course, means it’s time to take a look at the best New Year’s resolutions for law school students and the steps you need to take to make them happen: Resolutions For New Year By Law Students

Resolution #1: Recommit.
Remember that first day of law school? Remember how enthusiastic, focused and positive you were? You need to recapture that feeling. As with any activity, time and experience can change the way you feel about it. But whether you’re a 1L who is questioning your decision, a 2L who’s tired or a 3L who has become cynical, you need to find that passion again so you can set yourself up for success.

You can do this by connecting with a tutor who can help you better understand the topics you’re studying, volunteering, getting involved in a clinic or even doing something daring, like trying to arrange an informational interview with a well-respected judge.

Resolution #2: Network.
It’s not the most enjoyable experience in the world, but it is a necessary evil. So go ahead and get out there and meet people. You never know who is going to be willing to lend you a helping hand. And you’ll never know if you don’t show up for networking events.

You can do this by having a list of people you want to meet, going to events with a partner and being willing to step outside of your comfort zone. Make sure you keep a list of the people you meet and follow up with them.

Resolution #3: Get in shape.
If your body is a temple, why have you been treating it like a tent ever since you started law school? OK, you know why. Law school is mentally and emotionally exhausting and that wariness manifests itself in the form of too much bad food, not enough sleep and absolutely no exercise. But you’re going to need your body and mind to be in top-notch shape to reach your goals.

You can do this by committing to getting enough sleep every night, hitting the gym at least three times a week for 30 minutes and cutting out three bad meals a week. That’s it. It’s that simple–and it will begin to work. You will be amazed by how much your performance improves as your physical and emotional state improves.
