Dress the Part for Your Job Interview

If networking shows you where the proverbial door is and your resume gets your foot in it, the interview is where you get to walk through it and secure a permanent seat at the table.

In other words, it’s the final part of the job-seeking process, and how you handle it will determine your success. That means everything has to be on point – from the way you prepare, to the way you answer questions, to the way you dress. Yes, what you wear matters. It matters a lot, so you need to make sure to dress for success. Here’s how:

• Dress for the part.
  If you’re interviewing at a roll-up-your-sleeves, work-a-day firm, feel free to wear something that shows you’re not afraid to get down and dirty. If you’re interviewing with one of the big-time firms in your city, make sure you’re dressed like a high-priced attorney. But always (always!) dress in a professional manner. You want them to know you’re taking the job seriously.
• Get comfortable.
  There is nothing worse than sitting through an interview when your clothes don’t feel good on your body. Make sure what you’re wearing fits you well. Visit a tailor if necessary. It might cost a little extra, but you’ll be glad you did when you’re sitting in the hot seat.
• Show some personality.
  Focus on personality and not attitude. Some people will tell you to wear black, grey, or navy blue, but you can also add some color to your outfit and show some personality. Remember, you want to stand out from the crowd. If you go overboard on the color, you can stand out in a bad way, so make sure to moderate the use of color.

In addition to the advice listed above, you should always:

• Wear formal shoes.
• Where a shirt or blouse that comes complete with a collar.
• Make sure your clothing fits you properly.
• Avoid excessive jewelry (this applies to both men and women).
• Find an outfit that makes you feel as confident as possible.
