How I Got to Six Figures as a Lawyer Fast… Without Being a Gunner

I’m living the dream. I’m a litigator at law firm you know about – one of those referred to as “Big Law.”

Yeah, I got that six-figure job right out of school.

But here’s the thing that might surprise you: I didn’t go to a top-tier law school. Nope. It wasn’t even on the East Coast. In fact, you probably haven’t even heard of my law school.

Shocking, isn’t it?

By now you’ve got me pegged as a gunner. You know, the front-row-sitting, hand-always-flying-in-the-air, sycophant-to-the professor guy who was hell-bent on finishing top in his class – the guy everyone hates.

Well, you’re wrong.

I’ve accomplished everything by doing three things: working hard, networking and hiring a law tutor.

Let’s talk about law tutors for a minute, shall we?

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “I don’t need a tutor.” After all, you’ve always finished at the top of your class. You’re gifted. A natural. You’re the Joe Mauer of students. You get it and you get it done.

I hate to break it to you, but so did everyone else in your law class. Every one of them is just like you — young and impressive.

So what are you going to do to set yourself apart from them? Be a gunner and undercut them all the way to the top 10 percent? You could. But that’s not you. Instead, you’ll work your tail off, make a lot of connections and, yes, even hire a tutor. That’s what I did. And look at me now.

Law school is hard. It’s a grind. You’re learning to think in ways you’ve never thought before. And then there’s this (and pay attention to this because this is a tip that will make law school a whole lot easier for you): There are no right answers in law school.

It’s true. The law is relative and your success in class and in the real world will depend on your ability to understand and manipulate a lot of different facts.

Take it from me. I’m doing great. And, because I’m not a gunner — because I’m a nice guy — I’m sharing my knowledge with you. I actually tutor law school students, most of whom are already working hard. Sure, I make sure they’re understanding key concepts. But I also introduce them to my colleagues (networking!!) and help them finish in the top 10 percent of their class so they can live the dream too.
