Summer Study Abroad Programs: Memorable Experience with Great Value

Law School Summer InternshipThe winter winds are on their way in, and snow is right around the corner—so naturally it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to do this coming summer.

If you’re not graduating in the Spring, you may want to consider packing your bags and studying the law in a foreign country.

Great experience

It’s no secret that the world is shrinking—at least in terms of how people from different cultures and countries interact with one another.

Businesses are going multi-national, nonprofit organizations are expanding beyond their local communities and the government is ensnared in deals and disputes on every continent. This means everyone needs lawyers with international experience, or at the very least an understanding of how U.S. law interacts with laws of other countries.

Heading overseas for the summer is a great opportunity to gain experience and understanding of comparative law.

Most summer study abroad programs offer courses taught by American professors as well as instructors from the host country, so you’ll hear firsthand how U.S. law compares with foreign laws. You’ll also likely have more opportunities to interact with your instructors because most study abroad programs have smaller class sizes.

And if you play your cards right, you may also gain access to some of the preeminent jurists in the world. United States Chief Justice John Roberts, for example, teaches in summer study abroad programs each year—this year he’ll be in London.

Having an opportunity to learn from (and impress) the Chief Justice is priceless.

Great value

While studying abroad is a hefty investment, it’s really a great value.

You’ll likely have the opportunity to pick up six credits in the span of a month—and the cost-per-credit is usually a lot less than what you’re paying during the school year. Sure, you have to pay for airfare, lodging and food, but if you find the right program, those costs can be off-set by the money you’ll save on credits.

Also: most law schools open their study abroad programs to students from other schools—so here’s your chance to study at Harvard, if only for a month.
